Surface Combustion, Inc. was awarded a patent for the inventions of delivery of atomized liquid hydrocarbons to yield a reactive atmosphere inside an industrial heat treat furnace.  The atmosphere may be comprised of any variety of hydrocarbons to create a carburizing, reducing, or reactive atmosphere for materials processing.  The patent also covers the application to an atmosphere generator (carrier gas) as well as acting as an enriching gas to increase carburizing potential.   

The delivery of hydrocarbons is metered and can be introduced in finite, pulsed-dosages to allow process control.  

The invention can be applied to Allcase® Batch Integral Quench Carburizing furnaces, RX® Endothermic Gas Generators, or continuous carburizers. Additionally, RX® endothermic gas recycling can be aided with the invention.   

The inventors include Ralph Poor, John Gottschalk, and William Bernard Jr.

Surface Combustion, Inc. recently attended the Center for Heat Treating Excellence (CHTE) Board of Directors meeting at Worcester Polytechnic Institute (WPI) in Worcester, MA.

As part of our ongoing involvement with CHTE, Surface Combustion sponsored a WPI graduate student to run test cycles at our metallurgical laboratory in Maumee, OH, helping support an ongoing research project. Surface Combustion also facilitated the running of low pressure carburizing cycles, at a commercial heat treater, that has our Surface Combustion VringCARBTM Cloverleaf Vacuum Carburizer, as part of their equipment portfolio.

William J. Bernard, Jr., President and CEO of Surface Combustion, Inc. (Maumee, Ohio) was named a Fellow of ASM International for innovation and advances in furnace technologies. He was also recognized for his leadership in support of education for the heat treating industry. The award was established to recognize members for their distinguished contributions to materials science and engineering and to develop a broadly based forum of technical and professional leaders to serve as advisors to the Society.  The award was presented at the ASM Awards Dinner on Tuesday, October 18, 2011 in Columbus, Ohio.
