Surface Combustion Participates in CHTE

Surface Combustion, Inc. recently attended the Center for Heat Treating Excellence (CHTE) Board of Directors meeting at Worcester Polytechnic Institute (WPI) in Worcester, MA.

As part of our ongoing involvement with CHTE, Surface Combustion sponsored a WPI graduate student to run test cycles at our metallurgical laboratory in Maumee, OH, helping support an ongoing research project. Surface Combustion also facilitated the running of low pressure carburizing cycles, at a commercial heat treater, that has our Surface Combustion VringCARB® Cloverleaf Vacuum Carburizer, as part of their equipment portfolio.

William J. Bernard, Jr., President and CEO of Surface Combustion, Inc. (Maumee, Ohio) was named a Fellow of ASM International for innovation and advances in furnace technologies. He was also recognized for his leadership in support of education for the heat treating industry. The award was established to recognize members for their distinguished contributions to materials science and engineering and to develop a broadly based forum of technical and professional leaders to serve as advisors to the Society. The award was presented at the ASM Awards Dinner on Tuesday, October 18, 2011 in Columbus, Ohio.

Bernard Receives 2011 George Bodeen Heat Treating Achievement Award

William J. Bernard Jr., President and CEO of Surface Combustion, Inc. (Maumee, Ohio), is the recipient of the 2011 George H. Bodeen Heat Treating Achievement Award.

Established in 1996, this award recognizes distinguished and significant contributions to the field of heat treating through leadership, management or engineering development of substantial commercial impact. Bernard is recognized "for innovative thinking, outstanding vision, and passion as an entrepreneur of equipment manufacturing for the heat-treating marketplace and for commitment to educating the next generation of heat treaters."

The award presentation will be made at the HTS General Membership Meeting on Nov. 1, 2011, at the ASM Heat Treating Society Conference and Exposition in Cincinnati, Ohio.

Surface Combustion Now Offers The Vertical Tube Allcase In Four Sizes

Surface Combustion, Inc. has expanded the “Standard of the Industry" Allcase^® batch integral quench (BIQ) furnace line by adding three new sizes, incorporating the vertical tube configuration.

The original 36” x 72” x 36” vertical tube Allcase^® was released in 2006 featuring six vertically mounted “U” tubes and 1,800,000 BTU input. Surface now offers three smaller versions to address our customers’ needs.

The new offerings include the 36” x 48” x 36” Allcase^® with traditional 4,000 pound load capacity. It features 1,200,000 BTU’s (approximately 30% more than the horizontal tube system) and uses four spark ignited radiant tube burners with bayonet style recuperators.

For those processing taller than normal workloads, Surface offers the 36” x 48” x 42” Allcase^® also with a 4,000 pound load capacity. The 42” height is ideal for treating long shafts or gearing.

The latest installment in the vertical tube Allcase^® furnace family is a 24” x 36” x 24” effective area BIQ furnace. This furnace has a 1,500 pound capacity and 600,000 BTU input (approximately 25% more than the horizontal tube system).

All furnaces are available with either the new Surface C6-A process control system or Allen Bradley CompactLogix System (CLX/CASEmate^®) with Color Panelview Plus. Other control systems available upon request.

Surface Combustion, Inc. exhibited at the Thermtech China Show 2011 and presented at 3^rd China Heat Treat Forum in Beijing, China. We would like to thank all the attendees and colleagues that visited with us and a special thank you to everyone that welcomed us to visit their factories.

Surface presented on the growing capacity requirements of Allcase^® batch integral quench carburizing furnaces. The reason for choosing batch is for increased flexibility and the option of gas fired heating. Surface Combustion offers gas fired heating for batch furnaces using Trident^® tubes, single ended recuperated tubes, or U-tubes. Surface also discussed the differences between gas fired and Prolectric^® heated pit furnaces, and our exclusive offering of gas fired vacuum furnaces.

China has an expanding supply of natural gas. As an OEM and pioneer in large gas fired BIQ heat treat furnaces and auxiliary equipment, like RX^® endothermic gas generators, Surface can offer proven designs to Chinese heat treaters.
