New Application for a Proven Design

The Federal Renewal Electricity Production Tax Credit (PTC) (renewed and expanded most recently in February 2009) is a per-kilowatt-hour tax credit for electricity generated by qualified energy resources. The tax credit amount is 2.1 ¢/kWh (indexed for inflation) for wind resource type generated electricity, with the duration for the credit of 10 years after the date the facility is placed in service. A 2.0 MW wind turbine operating at a net 50% efficiency would generate a $1,839,600.00 tax credit for the duration of the program. With an average installed cost of $3,500,000.00 for a 2.0 MW system, over half of this investment is recoverable through the tax credit program.

The above tax credit, coupled with the Energy Policy Act of 2005 that requires no less than 7.5% of the total electricity consumed by the Federal Government to come from renewable energy by 2013, has created a demand for large (2.0 MW) wind turbines, which requires like-sized components, particularly gearboxes, rotors and bearings.

This increase in production for large components has in turn created a demand for industrial heat treating equipment capable of processing such massive parts in the most cost effective manner (capital, operational, maintenance) while consistently achieving the required metallurgical properties.

Surface Combustion has manufactured atmosphere pit type furnaces for these applications for over 70 years, with our first unit delivered to an aircraft landing gear manufacturer in 1937. Our most recent designs are capable of processing loads of 120″ diameter, 120″ high with a gross load of 30,000 lbs and are offered in a wide variety of configuration including heating systems, hearths, atmosphere recirculation and baffle and/or muffle designs.
